The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is seeking to fill the following position at the earliest opportunity:

Full Professorship (W3)
in the field of
Functional Materials

Kenn-Nr. P2502

The Hamburg University of Technology invites applications from candidates with outstanding achievements in research and teaching in materials science, with a strong focus on functional materials, particularly in the context of architectured and/or hybrid materials systems for mechanical, transport phenomena, energy, or photonic applications. Applicants should have an excellent international track record in foundational research and practical implementation in this area. Candidates should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary work with other engineering sciences present at TUHH and contributing to future materials systems in application domains such as multiscale structured materials that interact with water. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with a background in one or more of the following application areas:

  • Development, production and characterisation of multiscale structured materials
  • Inorganic or non-metallic materials
  • Mechanical, electrochemical or photonic properties
  • Interactions between materials and the environment, particularly water or aqueous environments
  • Utilisation of interface and nanoconfinement effects
  • Development of devices based on materials with extraordinary physical and/or electrochemical properties and potential applications in lightweight construction, actuation, sensing and acoustics, transparent ceramics and structural colour, energy conversion and storage

The successful candidate will head a Materials Science Institute in the School of Mechanical Engineering, more specifically the international master's degree program in Materials Science and Engineering and related degree programs. Additionally, active participation in strategically relevant funding proposals in materials science, such as collaborative DFG or European funding, is expected. The professorship is responsible for teaching in the bachelor's and master's degree programs of the School of Mechanical Engineering. The position holder is expected to actively contribute to the further development of the TUHH's curricula.

The Hamburg University of Technology is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes and encourages applications from women. Women are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications. Applications from disabled people with equivalent qualifications will also be given preference.

The application deadline is August 29th 2025.
