Full Professorship (W3)
in the field of
Building Materials

Kenn-Nr. P2503

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks to appoint an exceptional candidate to strengthen fundamental research in building materials. Applicants must hold a PhD in civil engineering or a natural science discipline with a clear connection to civil engineering. They should also demonstrate postdoctoral experience—whether in academia or engineering practice—and exhibit an outstanding record in research, teaching, or professional practice. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across TUHH’s strategic priorities, secure third-party funding, and contribute to (or lead) coordinated research initiatives. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the experimental facilities for building materials research. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sustainable building materials and binders for achieving net-zero emissions
  • Eco-friendly building materials for a circular economy
  • Innovative methods for the development, testing, and assessment of building materials, encompassing both experimental and numerical approaches
  • Durability of building materials and structures in challenging environments, such as freshwater or saltwater settings
  •  Rehabilitation, maintenance, recycling and reuse of existing structures

The research areas outlined above offer outstanding opportunities for collaboration across TUHH, as well as with universities and research institutes in Hamburg and Northern Germany, and with industrial partners.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (in German and English) on topics including building materials, materials testing, and building chemistry and physics. They will employ innovative teaching methods and contribute actively to the development of new degree programmes. Administrative duties within the school and university will also be required as necessary. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to the ongoing `Materialprüfung Hamburg – für nachhaltiges Bauen´ (Material Testing Hamburg – for Sustainable Construction) project.

The Hamburg University of Technology is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes and encourages applications from women. Women are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications. Applications from disabled people with equivalent qualifications will also be given preference.

The application deadline is 11 December 2025.
