The position is embedded in a prestigious DFG-funded Research Training Group (RTG) 2583 devoted to modeling simulation and optimization jointly hosted by the Univ. Hamburg and Hamburg Univ. of Technology.

Emphasis is put to research in fluid dynamic applications of cutting edge applied mathematics, and involves some dedicated training. The RTG involves approximately 15 PhD students and 10 PIs from different areas in applied mathematics and fluid engineering.

Applicants should perform research in the either of the following areas supervised by Prof. Sabine Le Borne (Position II) and Prof. Thomas Rung (Position Ia/b):

YOUR TASKS
Please indicate your preference for position Ia/b or II in your application and provide a small (0,5 pages) related motivation.

• Ia: (1) Efficient model-order reducing approaches to unsteady optimization. (2) Optimization of unsteady propeller-hull-interaction. (3) Comparison of full-/reduced-order optimization approaches in unsteady applications. (4) robust & risk aware transient optimization. Examples included should address shape optimization of energy saving devices for modern propulsion systems.
  
• Ib: (1) Application of quantum-inspired tensor network methods to formulate reduced-order models for wall-bounded flows. (2) Formulation of classical Finite Volume building blocks using Matrix Product State and Matrix Product Operator formats. (3) Transfer of Tensor Network simulations to Quantum gate level simulations using variational quantum methods. Examples included should address laminar/turbulent attached and separated wall-bounded engineering shear flows.
  
• II: Applicants should perform research in the development of iterative solvers for linear systems of equations arising in fluid flow problems. Recently, a new meshfree discretization technique for partial differential equations based on radial basis functions has been introduced. The objective of this project is the development and analysis of rank-structured preconditioners for sequences of linear systems resulting from such meshfree discretizations of fluid flow problems.
  

YOUR PROFILE

• Ia: Excellent Master Dregree in Mechanical Engineering, preferably Theoretical Mechanical Engineering, Industrial/Applied Mathematics or Scientific Computing
  

• Ib: Excellent Master Dregree in Mechanical Engineering, preferably Theoretical Mechanical Engineering or Computational Physics, Industrial/Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing
  
• Proven competencies in applied mathematics and fluid dynamics.
  
• Focus on computational fluid dynamics using finite-volume methods and fluid dynamic optimization approaches. Experience in (Ia) industrial CFD or (Ib) tensor network simulations is an asset
• Background and knowledge of High-Performance Computing methods in CSE; sound background in physics of fluids; proven background in different programming paradigms
• Experience in the use of HPC-systems, coding competencies in FORTRAN, PYTHON, C++
• Excellent communication as well as proven language capabilities and team working skills.
  
  
• II: Excellent Master Dregree in (Industrial/Applied) Mathematics or Scientific Computing

• Proven competencies in applied mathematics (numerical linear algebra, numerical solution of partial differential equations).
