The Research Training Group 3068, Climate-Informed Engineering, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on climate-informed sustainable resource management and environmental engineering. As part of this Research Training Group, we offer dedicated researchers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in an outstanding research environment at Hamburg University of Technology, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH). The RTG is aiming to increase the percentage of women in science. We particularly encourage women to apply. Due to their underrepresentation, they will be given priority in cases of equal suitability, qualifications and professional performance.

The advertised position is supervised by the Institute of Solids Process Engineering and Particle Technology (SPE). We aim to investigate the impact of different raw material properties of lignin, influenced by climate variations on the spray drying production process. To achieve consistent product properties from diverse raw materials, adjustments to the process parameters of the spray drying process are necessary. The aim is to develop a model to establish correlations between the properties and adapted process conditions with climate data, utilizing lab- and pilot-scale spray dryers.

YOUR TASKS

  • Perform spray drying experiments on lab- and pilot plant-scale
  • Analyze resulting product properties (e.g. regarding particle size distribution, structure, flowability)
  • Data analysis to find correlations between raw material properties, process conditions and resulting product properties
  • Model development
  • Model validation on industrial-scale with industrial partner Lignopure GmbH

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject*s process engineering, mechanical engineering

Required knowledge and personal skills

  • Knowlegde in particle and drying technology, experiences in spray drying and particle analysis are advantageous
  • Experiences in data analysis and model development
  • Very good knowledge of the German and English language (B2/C1 GeR)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in an international research environment

    OUR OFFER

    • Research within the framework of the RTG with a large offer of trainings and lectures
    • Collaboration in an interdisciplinary, highly motivated and committed team
    • Research in an innovative, progressive and industrially very relevant field
    • Participation in national and international conferences
    • Fitness club on campus, varsity sports and special conditions in selected sports and gym clubs
