Application deadline 01.04.2025
Scope full time and for a maximum of four years

The UNU Hub on Engineering to Face Climate Change was founded to address critical challenges related to water, soil, and the environment. In line with this mission, this scholarship has been established to tackle environmental issues facing the Global South. In this context, the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics is seeking a researcher in the field of geo-Hydroinformatics and environmental engineering to apply advanced modeling techniques and data-driven tools for developing predictive models to detect and quantify dust storms on a global scale. The successful candidate will leverage Industry 4.0 technologies—including AI approaches, satellite remote sensing, global datasets, and big data analytics—to measure dust storms, develop vulnerability maps, and assess their socio-economic impacts across various scenarios.
Applicants from the Global South are especially encouraged to apply.

YOUR TASKS

  • Utilize big data analytics, satellite remote sensing, global datasets, and computational tools to detect and analyze dust storms and their global impacts
  • Develop predictive models to quantify the interactions between dust storms, environmental factors, and human activities
  • Publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Institute
  • Cooperation within United Nation University Hub Engineering to face Climate Change
  • Collaborate with other universities and institutes through research visits, as needed

YOUR PROFILE

  • MSc degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, hydrology, ecohydrology, fluid mechanics, or a related field
  • Proven experience in large-scale modeling, big data analytics, and satellite remote sensing for studying soil and water processes, ideally demonstrated through high-quality peer-reviewed publications, outstanding academic performance, and recognitions
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Commitment to international collaboration, teamwork, and student supervision, if required

    OUR OFFER

    • We offer the opportunity for scientific qualification towards a PhD degree
    • Working experience in a very international, stimulating, multidisciplinary and dynamic institute
    • Access to state-of-the-art experimental and numerical tools and platforms
