For the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Ship Theory of the Hamburg University of Technology for the earliest possible date, we are looking for three (3):

RESEARCH ASSOCIATES (m/f/d) / WISSENSCHAFTLICHE MITARBEITER (m/w/d)

full time and for a maximum of  36 months.

The remuneration and recruiting are based on the Marie Curie program and the relevant mobility rules (cf. below). The documents submitted will be made available to the partners involved, to enable a coordinated selection/recruitment

No.: 10323WM8

Eligible researchers must be doctoral candidates, i.e., not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment). Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible. Eligible researchers must undertake transnational mobility, i.e. researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English, in oral and written form. The recruited doctoral candidates will benefit from a dedicated training program comprising an integrated curriculum of local and network wide training activities related to the development of scientific knowledge and the enhancement of transferable skills.

YOUR TASKS
The three positions are part of the MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE Doctoral Network “Multiphase Flow Optimization strategies” (MFLOP) with 16 partners from 8 countries. All research positions aim at simulation-based optimization of industrial multiphase flows using the adjoint method

  • Position 1 (Beneficiary TUHH): To formulate of a consistent primal/adjoint two-phase flow model based, dedicated to continuous adjoint shape optimizing of minimal drag/power-requirement free floating merchant vessels. To extent the approach towards unsteady optimization studies using compressive incremental order reduction techniques and apply them to optimizing the added resistance of merchant vessels in seaways. The position is assigned to TUHH involves strong collaboration with J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG. The duty location is Hamburg (Germany).
  • Position 2 (PhD from TUHH): To develop a data-driven approach that enables mesh-independent consideration of propulsion during optimizing studies and implement this into a finite volume framework. To formulate appropriate objective functionals for power requirement, to derive constraint management capabilities dedicated to industrial marine engineering problems and implement this into a finite volume framework. To apply the enhanced, industrialized shape optimizing method to full-scale self-propelled ship configurations. The position is assigned to the beneficiary J.M. Voith SE & Co. KG and involves strong collaborations with TUHH. The duty location is Heidenheim (Germany). The PhD will be enrolled at TUHH.
  • Position 3 (PhD from TUHH): To develop a strategy for an efficient reduction of transient SPH-results used by an adjoint-based optimization framework and to formulate an adjoint SPH optimization framework dedicated to optimizing the efficiency for Pelton turbine free-surface flows. To implement the adjoint approach into an inhouse SPH-flow solver and to validate the method for Pelton-turbine geometries and involves strong collaborations with TUHH. The position is assigned to the beneficiary Andritz Hydro AG in Switzerland. The duty location is Vevey (Switzerland). The PhD will be enrolled at TUHH.

The MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE Doctoral Network "Multiphase Flow Optimization Strategies" (MFLOP) is looking for further doctoral candidates in the field of optimization of cavitating flows at NTUA in Athens

The recruitment process will involve the respective collaborating partners (TUHH and VOITH for positions 1,2; TUHH and ANDRITZ for position 3) and documents will be transferred to their representatives. Please indicate your preference(s) in your application and provide a small (0,5 pages) motivation.

YOUR PROFILE

In particular, candidates must not have been employed in the duty locations country of the beneficiary for more than 12 months during the immediate 36 months before the recruitment date, and must not possess a doctoral degree at the day of recruitment.
  • Clear focus on computational fluid dynamics using finite-volume or SPH methods and fluid dynamic optimization approaches. Experience in industrial CFD is an asset.
  • Background and knowledge of High-Performance Computing methods in CSE; sound background in physics of fluids; proven background in different programming paradigms.
  • Excellent communication as well as proven language capabilities and team working skills. Applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English, in oral and written form.
