Wax production, which is predominantly based on fossil feedstocks, is associated with significant environmental problems due to its
petrochemical origin. Although renewable options exist, there are challenges such as competition with the food and feed industries,
environmental degradation and problems with monocultures. There is therefore a need to research environmentally friendly alternatives for
wax production.
The aim of this project is to develop a sustainable alternative for wax production using waste materials with a high fatty acid content as
feedstock. As the current use of by-products containing fatty acids is directed towards energy recovery and therefore potential remains
untapped, enzymatic processes will be developed to convert the fatty acids into waxes that can be used in different applications. With this
aim, the required properties of the end product have to be defined, variations in the raw material composition will be investigated and a
sustainability and economic assessment as well as a market analysis will be carried out
