Discover the forefront of materials science with a PhD opportunity at TUHH, delving into the realm of stimuli-responsive materials. The position is embedded in the prestigious joint research project HySiSound between the TUHH and DESY and the Institute Langevin (Paris) funded by the prestigious german-french research initiative ANR DFG NLE. Inspired by nature's adaptability, the HySiSound project seeks to revolutionize mechanical adaptability through the creation of a hybrid nano-material system. Tunable elasticity and acoustics are achieved by harnessing the synergy between nanoporous silicon and confined liquid crystal elastomers as a functionalization. The synthesis is accompanied by state-of-the-art synchrotron characterization methods, laser ultrasonics and the various facilities in our laboratories.


  • Synthesize functionalized porous silicon hybrids with optimized properties
  • Perform experiments to investigate the phase behavior and confinement effects of hybrid materials, utilizing e.g. scanning electron microscopy, optical techniques and synchrotron-based experiments
  • Utilize in-situ laser ultrasonics for comprehensive assessment of acoustic characteristics, to understand mechanical properties and wave propagation behavior
  • Collaborate closely with an international, multidisciplinary team to ensure successful project execution, including coordination of experimental activities and sharing of insights
  • Communicate research findings through presentations at conferences, workshops, and scientific publications


  • Completed master’s degree recognized in Germany, preferably in Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Physics, or a related field, with a strong foundation in experimental research
  • Strong background either in mechanics and elastic guided waves or in synthesis and polymer chemistry, with a willingness to learn and adapt to the other area
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills for data interpretation, particularly in the context of complex material behaviors
  • Exhibit the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, fostering effective communication and collaboration across different areas of expertise
  • Display excellent communication skills in English


    • Outside of duties, further scientific training is possible, the results can be used for a dissertation to gain a doctorate
    • Engage in pioneering research at the forefront of nanomaterials and mechanics, shaping future technologies
    • Work closely with renowned researchers in an international setting, fostering interdisciplinary exchanges
