At the Institute for „Organizational Design and Collaboration Engineering“, we conduct research and teaching in the areas of organizational design and collaboration engineering. We focus on the explanation and design of structures, systems, and processes to promote collaboration and innovation across disciplinary and organizational boundaries.
We are seeking a motivated candidate to join a DFG-funded research project that focuses on the pivotal role that users play in exaptive innovation—an innovation process where existing technologies or artifacts are creatively repurposed for entirely new, unintended applications. Examples of such breakthroughs include the use of aviation technology for medical purposes or the development of drugs like Viagra. This project aims to explore the dynamics of how users, such as healthcare professionals or enthusiasts in other industries, adapt existing tools and technologies to meet emerging needs. The research will focus mainly on the medical device industry, where exaptive innovation is particularly prevalent.

Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the PhD candidate will help uncover the conditions and processes that enable users to drive such innovations

As a researcher, you will be actively involved in the establishment and further development of the institute. Together we want to contribute with our research and teaching to foster cross-boundary collaboration and innovation.
