The Center for Data and Computing in Natural Science (CDCS) is a new scientific institution, which is being established in Science City Bahrenfeld, formed as a partnership between the University of Hamburg, Hamburg University of Technology and DESY. The CDCS is dedicated to the development and application of modern information technologies (Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Scientific Computing) to complex scientific problems. A total of 11 postdoctoral positions will be part of the CDCS.
Within CDCS the Cross-Disciplinary Lab "Computational Controls of Accelerators" focusses on data-driven control of complex processes in large scale research facilities, e.g., operation of particle accelerators for conducting scientific experiments. Controls implemented in a multi-layered, highly distributed hardware-software architecture process sensor data at high speed. While today, configuration and operation of such facilities require extensive expert knowledge, the data-driven approach may automate and simplify these tasks. However, data driven approaches based on machine learning are typically rooted in statistics ensuring correctness up to a certain confidence while control may demand guarantees of correctness.
We are looking for a candidate to fill one of the two positions available in the CDL "Computational Control of Accelerators" (the second position of this CDL will be filled with a candidate employed by DESY).
Possible research directions are
• either correctness in data-driven control, e.g., o end-to-end monitoring solutions,
o formal verification techniques and certification,
o approaches for making the inner working of data-driven analysis understandable.
• or architectures for data-driven ultra-fast feedback control, e.g.,
o high-dimensional real-time controls with low latency,
o acceleration using modern Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Zynq MPSoC/Versa),
o layered system architectures for processing large data sets using vector processors for artificial intelligence.
Strong candidates with research interests and background related to at least one of the two domains are welcome. Strong team spirit to engage with the research groups at DESY and TU Hamburg will be essential.
