Start of employment as soon as possible
Application deadline 26.01.2026
Scope part-time (65%) and for a maximum of three years
We are seeking applications for a 3-year Ph.D. position in polymer and materials chemistry, starting as soon as possible. The doctoral project focuses on the development and characterization of conductive polymer–based electrode materials for bioelectrochemical CO₂ conversion.
The interaction between microorganisms and electrodes critically determines CO₂ conversion rates and production efficiency. Conventional electrode materials offer high conductivity but limited tunability in surface chemistry and biocompatibility. In this project, conductive polymers are used to engineer the electrode–microorganism interface in a targeted manner. The Ph.D. project includes:
- Synthesis and electrochemical characterization of conductive polymer/graphite composites, using materials such as PANI and PEDOT:PSS prepared via chemical and electrochemical methods.
- Structural modification of conductive polymers to improve biological and mechanical properties, including self-doping, functional group introduction, and incorporation of biocompatible additives.
Long-term stability and robustness studies under operation conditions, assessing electrochemical performance and microorganism–electrode, feeding into the selection of materials for a reactor demonstrator.
