The Research Training Group 3068, Climate-Informed Engineering, at Hamburg University of Technology, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on climate-informed sustainable resource management and environmental engineering. As part of this Research Training Group, we offer dedicated researchers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in an outstanding research environment at Hamburg University of Technology, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH). The advertised position is supervised by the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics which is interested in tackling global challenges concerning water, soil, and the environment. We aim to provide accurate and quantitative insights into multiscale and multiphase ecohydrological processes occurring near the Earth's surface. In this context, we are seeking a researcher specializing in geo-hydroinformatics and environmental engineering. The ideal candidate will employ state-of-the-art modeling approaches, satellite remote sensing, big data analytics, and data-driven tools—combined with strong programming skills—to study desiccating saline lakes worldwide and the resulting saline dust storms and their implications on soil health, salinization, and human well-being under various conditions.

YOUR TASKS

  • Utilize big data analytics, satellite remote sensing, global datasets, and computational tools to investigate desiccating saline lakes worldwide
  • Develop models to quantify saline dust storms derived from desiccating saline lakes
  • Investigate the impacts of saline dust storms on soil health, salinization, human well-being, and overall environmental health
  • Publish research in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences
  • Collaborate with other institutes and universities; Assist with other tasks as assigned by the Head of the Institute

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject environmental engineering, civil engineering, hydrology, ecohydrology, fluid mechanics, or a related field

Required knowledge and personal skills

  • Proven experience in large-scale modeling, big data analytics, GIS, and satellite remote sensing ideally demonstrated through high-quality publication
  • Experience with AI algorithms and machine learning techniques for environmental modeling
  • Experience with topics related to desiccating lakes and saline dust storms would be an important asset
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both oral and written B2/ C1 GER)
