The Research Training Group 3068, Climate-Informed Engineering, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is seeking a researcher for an interdisciplinary project on sustainable material innovation. We offer highly motivated students the opportunity to pursue a doctorate as part of a research network in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH). Our main aim is to integrate cutting-edge climate science into engineering education and practice — preparing the next generation of engineers to create resilient and sustainable technical solutions to face the challenges presented by climate change. We are looking for a PhD candidate to explore the intersection of climate science, materials engineering, and sustainable chemistry. This project focuses on lignin, a natural and renewable polymer. Investigating how its properties vary with climate-informed processing conditions and how these characteristics affect its application as a functional coating material. Thereby we focus on technologies of production and coating of porous materials and specifically biopolymer-based aerogels.

    YOUR TASKS
Research fundamental questions of the project

    • How does lignin self-organize on biopolymer surfaces?
    • How do climate variables influence lignin’s properties and coating effectiveness?
    • Can we develop a model connecting climate data, lignin characteristics, and functional outcomes?

    YOUR PROFILE

    Requirements

    • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subjects process engineering or chemical engineering

    Required knowledge and personal skills

    • Experience in the basic laboratory work
    • Experience with AI algorithms and/or machine learning techniques
    • Knowledge of chemical, thermal, and/or biotechnological process engineering
    • Willingness for international scientific cooperation
    • Creativity, curiousity, and high motivation
    • Strong communication skills in the field of fundamental and applied research
    • Good knowledge of English (B2/C1)

      OUR OFFER

      • a job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment
      • intensive induction/ onboarding
