The Research Training Group 3068, Climate-Informed Engineering, at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on climate-informed sustainable resource management and environmental engineering. As part of this Research Training Group, we offer dedicated researchers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in an outstanding research environment at Hamburg University of Technology, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH).
The advertised position is supervised by the Institute for Materials and X-Ray Physics, a bridge facility between the TUHH and the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY. The institute is concerned with fundamental research in the field of condensed matter physics and the design of new functional materials. The focus is on the fundamental understanding of the behavior of soft condensed matter in extreme spatial confinement, especially within nanoporous media.

The applicant will conduct research on salt-water eutectics as phase change materials (PCMs) for sustainable energy systems. PCMs can store thermal energy as latent heat through phase transitions. Applications of thermal energy storage range from passively heated and cooled buildings, waste heat reutilization and renewable energy storage to creating better thermal insulation of electronics and battery heat management.

YOUR TASKS

  • Experimental analysis of salt-water eutectics as phase change materials
  • Achieving temperature-tunable phase transition behaviour for adaptive phase change materials in energy systems
  • Publication of research results at conferences and in scientific journals

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject*s Physics, materials science or (physical) chemistry

Required knowledge and personal skills

  • Expertise in the following fields are advantageous: porous materials, phase change materials, thermodynamics, X-ray analysis
  • Experimental skills and good data analysis skills.
  • Very good knowledge of English (C1 GeR) knowledge of German is advantageous

    OUR OFFER

    • We offer the opportunity to gain scientific qualifications with the aim of a doctorate
    • An interdisciplinary, international and cooperative environment
    • The Institute of Materials and X-ray Physics is located on the Science City Bahrenfeld campus as a bridge facility between the Hamburg University of Technology and the Photon Science division of the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, for further details please visit our website
