Join our project as a PhD Student to develop a novel platform for H₂-driven asymmetric catalysis in fine chemical synthesis. The research focuses on using hydrogenases to enable efficient biotransformations for asymmetric synthesis of compounds with high enantioselectivity. You will investigate electron transfer mechanisms, optimize enzymatic processes using advanced analytics like NMR and FTIR, and contribute to the developemnt of an automated reaction platform in a dynamic research environment.

The Institute for Technical Biocatalysis at the TU Hamburg develops sustainable biotechnological processes for a climate-friendly future. Our interdisciplinary, international team works with enthusiasm and scientific curiosity in an open, collegial atmosphere. Doctoral studies are research-oriented at the interface of biotechnology, chemistry and process engineering – innovative, application-oriented and in dialogue with research and industry.

YOUR TASKS

  • Develop and implement an automated reaction platform tailored for H₂-driven biocatalysis
  • Integrating inline FTIR and NMR spectroscopy for real-time monitoring and control of enzymatic reactions
  • Operate and optimize continuous-flow bioreactor systems for the safe and efficient application of hydrogen
  • Writing reports and scientific publications, applying for third-party funding and presenting at scientific conferences and congresses
  • Participation in teaching, supervision of research and final theses (project, Bachelor's and Master's theses)

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject bioprocess engineering, process engineering, technical chemistry, biocatalysis, organic chemistry

Desired knowledge and personal skills

  • Expertise in reactions utilizing molecular H₂
  • Expertise in biocatalysis
  • Experience with FTIR / NMR online analytics and chemometrics
  • Enjoy working in an interdisciplinary and international team as well as having an independent way of working

    OUR OFFER

    • a job in an interesting, friendly and appreciative working environment
    • intensive induction/ onboarding
    • 30 day vacation per year
    • comprehensive training and further education programs
